Two Democrats in the House of Representatives have sent Amazon a letter urging them to do something about their defective products. A recent CNN report revealed that over 1,500 people have left negative reviews on Amazon-brand products. The products were reported to explode, catch fire, melt, malfunction and cause other issues that posed a risk to the buyers’ health and safety.

As a result, the letter from the House of Representatives urges Amazon to investigate their history of selling defective products. The letter asks Amazon to recall their defective products and cease the production of products that might be harmful to consumers. Over 70 products were cited in the CNN report, many of them branded with the AmazonBasics private label.

The letter also criticized Amazon for promoting their products as “Bestsellers” or “Amazon’s Choice,” giving the false impression that their private label products were more popular than they really were. They pointed out that Amazon experiences a conflict of interest since they own the marketplace and sell AmazonBasics products in their own marketplace. Additionally, the letter criticized Amazon for deliberately ignoring the dangers and not acting sooner.

An Amazon spokesperson claimed that the company is committed to their customers’ safety and inspects all the AmazonBasics products in the marketplace. They said that customers can contact their customer service team at any time if they experience an issue.
